Safe Disposal of Pet Waste
I know what you are thinking…., “Really!?! My pet contributes to algae and degradation of the lake? Come on!?!” First I commend you for taking the time to check out this website for more information. Second, the bottom line, is everyone has a part! Your pet may be doing his or her part by spreading their waste in a field where it doesn’t runoff. It has time to decompose and recycles the phosphorous to plant growth. Or your pet may rely on you to scoop their poop and dispose of it properly. Or your pet may poop in the same spot which drains to the storm sewer which goes straight to the stream which feeds the algae! If that is the case, do your part and scoop the poop! According to the web resource below, which cites EPA, “two or three days worth of poop from about 100 dogs would contribute enough bacteria to temporarily close a bay (of the Cheasapeake Bay watershed) and all watershed areas within 20 miles of it, to swimming and shell fishing.”
